With the purchase of our fine quality new and used pianos, Don's Piano Warehouse includes a service package that covers tuning, regulation and voicing. We continue to provide these services on an ongoing maintenance basis to our customers as well as to all piano owners, for all makes and ages of pianos.
Tuning is the act of making minute adjustments to the tensions of the strings in your piano to properly align the intervals between their tones so that the instrument is "in tune". The tuning requires an assessment of the interaction between notes, which is different for every piano. Many manufacturers recommend tunings twice per year. A very minimum is once a year, regardless of the amount of use the piano receives. The string tension must be kept up to ensure proper tone.
If your piano has not been tuned regularly it may be below standard pitch. If so, pulling the tension all back at once can stress the piano's structure. Making a large pitch jump at one time does not allow for a stable tuning. The technician may need to raise all the strings to their proper average tension and only then would they be able to do a more accurate tuning - this is referred to as a Pitch Raise.
Regulation is simply making sure all the keys and action parts move at the correct depth and speed to maximize touch control and should be considered every three to five years, under normal family usage. Serious players may have this done annually. Voicing is a term used to describe the "tone regulation" of a piano, usually by hardening or softening the hammer felt. Hammers are made of fine wool and after striking the strings for months and years the wool compresses and becomes very hard, making a brighter sound. Voicing would correct this condition and should be considered every two or three years.
Repairs to your piano are done with great expertise by Don's Piano Warehouse.
Repairs can be made to structural components like the bridges, pin block, frame, and sound board. We also provide the full range of repairs to keys, pedals, casters, hammers, dampers, strings and all moving and fixed action parts.
We also offer a piano Appraisal service. It is impossible to give you a reasonable assessment of the value of your piano over the phone, as any kind of accuracy requires inspection of the condition of the structural components of your piano. We can send a technician to inspect your piano and give you a written appraisal of the value of your piano for insurance purposes, for possible re-sale pricing, or for an estimate of the possible repairs needed to place your piano in top-notch condition.
